ON:

Evelyn looked out the window and stared into the nothingness of space, thinking of the journey she had travelled to get where she was now. Only 10 years but sometimes it felt so much more, and also feels like it was yesterday. The moment that changed her life. Ten years of fighting for what she wants. Years of working hard in order to provide for Romy and herself. But also, years of missing her family. Her parents, her brother. She hadn’t seen them or heard from them since she left, hadn’t been able to say goodbye.

Two arms circled her middle and a soft kiss was pressed in her next. Jason, her rock. The person she could lean on when things got too hard. “You ok?” he asked.

“Just thinking of the past.” She spoke and leaned into him. They’d talked about her past a lot, and he knew that while she didn’t regret her decision, she did miss her family. They stared out the windows together before she asked. “Is she asleep?”

Jason let go of her and headed to the replicator while she walked to the couch. “Yes, only needed to read two chapters this evening.” He replicated two glasses of wine. All their stuff might be packed and ready to be transported to the station once they arrived. The replicator luckily made sure they were still able to have a relaxing drink after the busy day she’d had.

As he walked to the couch, handed her the glass and sat down himself, he said. “She really loves those books. I don’t get how she cannot get bored. I’ve read them like a million times to her by now.”

She scooted over closer to him and leaned her head against his shoulder before taking a sip of her wine. “I’m not sure if it’s the story, or the way you read them.” She let out a big breath and closed her eyes. Starting about an hour ago she was no longer the Zulu’s assistant chief of operations. The day has been chaotic as she transferred her last task to other officers before receiving a small farewell party from the team she’d worked with the last two years.

“Hey beautiful,” Jason said as he nudged her, knowing she was retreating back in her thoughts. “When one door closes, another opens up,” he said.

She smiled up at him, "Yeh, I guess. It's becoming real right now, after all the planning and arranging for the last few weeks. It's now really here. We're packed, said goodbye and tomorrow after we've docked on the station we'll board our new adventure."
